Direct answers to common questions about bunker, draft, tanker, bulk, P&I, hull and machinery and cargo damage surveys at major U.S. ports.

General questions about marine surveys at U.S. ports

A marine survey is an independent inspection or measurement of a vessel, its cargo or its fuel. At U.S. ports, Amica Marine provides these surveys for owners, charterers, traders, insurers and bunker suppliers, with 24/7 inquiries and attendance at major U.S. ports.

What does a marine surveyor do?

A marine surveyor independently measures, inspects and records the condition or quantity of vessels, cargo and fuel, and reports findings to the party that appointed the survey.

Is a marine surveyor the same as a class surveyor?

No. Class surveyors check compliance with classification rules. Independent marine surveyors like Amica Marine perform commercial and insurance surveys and do not issue class certificates.

How do I appoint Amica Marine?

Questions about bunker, draft and tanker surveys

Bunker, draft and tanker surveys establish quantity: fuel delivered or remaining on board, bulk cargo weight by displacement, and liquid cargo volume by gauging. Each relies on the vessel’s tables, observed readings and corrections, which our reports record in full.

Can a bunker survey be done at anchorage?

Yes, subject to launch availability and weather. We confirm logistics before attendance.

How accurate is a draft survey?

Under good conditions, generally within about half a percent of cargo weight. Swell, current and unsoundable tanks reduce accuracy and are noted in the report.

    What are OBQ and ROB?

OBQ is material on board before loading; ROB is material remaining after discharge. Both affect delivered quantity and in-transit loss.

Questions about claims, P&I and hull surveys

Claims surveys establish what happened, why and at what cost. P&I surveys address third-party liabilities such as cargo, dock damage and pollution; hull and machinery surveys address damage to the vessel; cargo damage surveys address loss or damage to goods carried.

How soon should a damage surveyor attend?

As soon as damage is suspected, before cargo is moved or repairs begin, so evidence is preserved and mitigation can start.

    Are you a P&I correspondent?

No. We are an independent surveyor acting on instructions from clubs, correspondents or members for specific cases.

    Do you attend joint surveys?

Yes. Our surveyor records agreed and disputed facts and reports them to the instructing party.
